Where you put those drawers and what you put in them Those little drawers for your screws and nuts and bolts, but He wants us to write to our “best ability, to make our own toolbox and build enough muscle so we can carry it around with us.” I like how he also uses every little detail about the real tool box in our metaphorical writing toolbox. In Stephen Kings passage “Toolbox”, he refers to his Uncles real toolbox and connects it to a metaphorical toolbox in writing.
Its basically telling you to expect the unexpected, to do everything to you’re best ability, go above and beyond, and prepare for the worst. If you don’t, you’re apt to find something you didn’t expect and get discouraged.” He then mentions something his uncle once told him,
I love that he goes in so much detail because you can really mentally picture what hes writing. His Uncle let him help fix a window with him again going into deep detail. This is what i imagined the toolbox to look like but wooden. The toolbox was called big’un, he goes into detail about what this toolbox looked like almost painting a picture in our heads with his words. On with the story, he first goes on to talk about why he likes the lyrics by John Prine and the people in his family who were carpenters and what they all called the toolbox. He doesn’t use exotic words that 90% of people do not know and some people have to look up to understand the story. Meaning they’re easy to read and they make sense, maybe this makes me sound stupid for saying this but he uses simple words (which make it easier and faster to read) yet a broad vocabulary appropriate enough for his crowd/ readers. Another thing I love about Stephen is that his stories flow, his sentences, paragraphs, and chapters all flow.
I think when they start a chapter off with a quote/ lyrics it really drags the readers in emotionally and helps them connect with the characters/ the story a lot better. Stephen starts Toolbox off with lyrics and I always love when writers do that.
I always thought Stephen King was an amazing writer with an unique imagination and I always blamed him for my fear of clowns.
